At Danske Fragtmænd, it's about more than moving goods from A to B. It's about creating a workplace where people have the opportunity to grow - personally, professionally, and as individuals.

Isabella Andersen is one of the people who has experienced this firsthand. Over the past year, she has been undergoing her gender transition and has received remarkable support from both her colleagues and management. It has been a journey that required courage, but it has also demonstrated the strength of a workplace where openness and respect are at the heart of the culture.

And open and trusting process
When Isabella decided to tell her workplace that she was beginning her gender-affirming transition, she did so with a mix of nervousness and relief. She had worked for the company for several years and was known to her colleagues as Jacob.

-I felt it was important that management knew what was happening. Not because I was unhappy at work, but because I didn't want anyone to think something was wrong. I'd rather be honest than hide such a significant part of who I am, she says.

Her conversation with her manager, Majbritt Vestergaard Kristensen, marked the beginning of a process defined by openness and mutual respect. Together, they planned how to inform colleagues and how to ensure the transition happened at a pace that allowed everyone to adjust comfortably.

-When Isabella shared her decision with me, it felt completely natural to focus on how we could best support her. To me, leadership is about creating an environment built on trust and psychological safety, where people feel comfortable being themselves — even when life takes an unexpected turn. I'm proud of the way our entire team welcomed Isabella, and proud that we have a culture where inclusion isn't just something we talk about, but something we put into practice every day, says Majbritt Vestergaard Kristensen, Customer Service Manager at Danske Fragtmænd.

Isabella chose to send an email to her closest colleagues in Customer Service and the Customer Department, explaining her transition while also inviting questions. The response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive.

-Within minutes, I received kind and supportive messages from my colleagues. I was met with warmth, understanding, and genuine curiosity. Before the day was over, there was already a new nameplate on my desk. That meant a great deal to me, she says.

Even in an industry where communication is often direct and straightforward, the entire process was characterised by respect. Only one customer reacted negatively, and the situation was addressed immediately.

-I felt completely supported. Majbritt stepped in, took over the conversation, and made it clear that this kind of behaviour has no place here,Isabella recalls.

A workplace where people can be themselves
For Isabella, being able to bring her authentic self to work has made a profound difference. She describes it as a huge relief to come to work without feeling the need to hide part of who she is.

-I spent so much energy playing a role that wasn't really me. Now I can finally breathe freely," she says.

Majbritt has followed Isabella's journey closely and has noticed a remarkable transformation. Isabella appears calmer, more focused, and more at ease, and that positive change has had an impact on those around her. For Majbritt, the experience has reinforced how openness and trust benefit not only the individual but the entire team.

Isabella also feels that sharing her story has helped create greater awareness of the importance of having a workplace where everyone feels safe to be themselves. She is proud to be part of a company that embraces people from many different backgrounds and walks of life.

-If my story can inspire someone else to be true to themselves, then it has all been worth it, she says.
